Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course Elements of architectural typology is the place in which to provide students with the necessary tools to learn the fundamentals of architectural discipline, learn to read and recognize the different thematic areas, the works and their protagonists, the theoretical context and the debate that has accompanied them over time.

The course deals with the typological and morphological aspects of architecture, focusing on compositional and distributional aspects of buildings as well as those of the city. Through the study and critical analysis of significant architectures, cities and parts of the city, the design research of prominent architects, the course aims to provide useful knowledge to understand the fundamentals and principles of architectural and urban design in a wide historical perspective from ancient to contemporary age. The course allows students to develop a critical point of view on design and its techniques in order to face the project at different scales of complexity.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course aims to build a close relationship between the theoretical and compositional aspects and their concrete application in the design phase. For this reason, the expected results concern not only students' ability to learn and understand the principles that regulate the complex relationship between architecture, type and city, but also how to use them for practical purposes in the project. The aim of the course is to refine the student's critical skills, providing a series of tools and techniques on which to base, in an autonomous and conscious manner, the links between the theoretical intentions, the analysis of a work, both on urban or architectural scale, and the design moment, following an analogical and comparative process.

Argomenti trattati

"Through the idea of type, we seek an approach somewhat indifferent to chronology. This momentary suspension of historical time enables us to identify structural analogies between buildings of different styles and appearances, boiling them down to an essential idea". I agree with this statement written by the theorist Carlos Martì Aris in his treatise, Variations of Identity: Type in Architecture.
For this reason, the seminar illuminates architectural typological elements by examining projects and buildings from diverse times and cultures, seeking traces of trans-historical continuities. These samples convey distinctive ideas about form, space, and technology, shaping the invention and adoption of specific types in a dynamic interplay of repetition and innovation.
The seminar aims to develop a consciousness of the relations between typological knowledge and technical and cultural content, examining projects that, for specific reasons, clearly highlight fundamental aspects of architectural design.
We think architectural qualities can cross the centuries and that an architect observes every piece of architecture only through a contemporary eye. Then, the seminar will discuss buildings from the classic era, the Renaissance, Modernism, and recent years.

The seminar is based on two integrated activities of equal relevance.
The first is a lecture sequence investigating how architects interpret, manipulate, and innovate typological principles. This investigation proceeds through the critical analysis of buildings and projects from different eras, times, and places, seeking the similarities and differences that link and separate them.
The second is a series of assignments in which students individually complete graphic and textual exercises to deepen their analysis and comprehension of the samples covered in class, elaborating on original concepts and applying the lessons' contents to basic design challenges.

Obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile - SDGs
Questo insegnamento contribuisce al raggiungimento dei seguenti Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell'Agenda ONU 2030:
  • SDG3 - GOOD HEALTH AND WELLBEING
  • SDG9 - INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
  • SDG13 - CLIMATE ACTION

The study of the submitted projects will focus on technological innovation, environmental quality, comfort, and climate control.

Prerequisiti

Modalità di valutazione
  • Prova orale obbligatoria
  • Progetto/i - Elaborato/i obbligatorio, individuale, con revisioni periodiche, con presentazione/discussione finale

Comprehending the lessons' contents is necessary to pass the exam.
At the exam, Students present a personal booklet and have an interview about the architectural themes and projects treated in the lessons, and they must be able to redraw plans and sections of a selected number of buildings or projects.
The booklet, made following a given template, shows the conceptual skills acquired in the course, containing the assignments elaborated after studying the projects and the buildings discussed in the lessons.
The relationship between the lessons and the assignments is the primary focus students have to aim for.
Bibliographical references, given here and during the lectures, offer the possibility of a substantial contribution to the making of a cultural background in architectural design.
All lessons and assignments will be accessible to the students who cannot attend the classes through recordings and slides.
The exam will follow the same rules for the attendant and non-attendant students.
