| Obiettivi dell'insegnamento |
|
This course aims at raising critical awareness on the most important ethical issues pertaining to the design, development, deployment, and use of transportation tecnologies (broadly construed). Through the in-depth study of such issues, it intends to support students in the exercise of ethical thinking skills and to promote responsible engineering practices. In addition, the course aims at offering useful conceptual tools to identify, analyze, and responsibly manage the moral impacts of mobility engineering. Finally, it intends to stimulate reflections and debates on key transportation ethics values such as safety, privacy, autonomy, inclusivity, justice, and sustainability by encouraging students to support moral claims with adequate justifications, solid arguments, and clear language, while listening to and taking the arguments of others seriously.

Knowledge and understanding
|
Students will:
- Acquire a broad perspective on the ethical and social impacts and implications of transportation technologies;
- Be acquainted with normative ethics and normative argumentation;
- Learn how to recognize and analyze ethical and social aspects and issues inherent in some transport technologies;
- Be able to understand how technical problems are inherently connected to a social dimension within a socio-technical perspective.

Students will:
- Be able to use critical skills in clarifying and ethically analyzing case-studies involving transportation technologies;
- Be able to apply ethical theories to problems created, aggravated or transformed by current transportation technologies;
- Be able to explore and assess possibilities for solving or diminishing existing and emerging ethical and social problems.

Students will be able:
- To autonomously and critically analyze the ethical issues raised by transportation technologies;
- To evaluate and select the appropriate knowledge in the effort of elaborating and justifying a philosophical argument on issues relevant to Transportation Ethics;
- To prepare a small research of critical analysis of an ethical, legal or societal issue related to a technical case-study.

- Be able to analyze transportation problems through an ethical lens.

The course explores the most relevant ethical, political, and societal aspects and problems related to the design, development, management, and use of transportation systems, with particular attention to urban transport. It is divided into two parts.
The first part examines Transportation Ethics against the background of Technology and Engineering Ethics in order to develop a clear picture of its components, importance, and difficulty. Moreover, it draws on Philosophical Ethics to show how Normative Theories such as Consequentialism, Deontology, and Virtue Ethics can offer useful tools to identify, analyze, study, and manage moral problems raised by transportation systems.
The second part of the course takes a closer look at these problems by discussing issues surrounding 1) Sustainability, 2) Safety and Autonomy, 3) Justice and Inclusivity, and 4) Privacy and Freedom.
Students will work in groups to learn first-hand how to apply these values to engineering practices in the transportation domain.
External non-academic speakers involved in the transportation sector will be invited to share their insights on what it means, in their line of work, to pursue sustainable mobility.

- Develop an argument in which the presented claims are justified by the use of ethical argumentation and the relevant literature;
- Present the work in class discussions and written reports on which the instructor will provide feedbacks before the final evaluation.

- The individual final essay must show that the student has the capacity to read and carefully study the suggested bibliography and the ability to apply it to relevant topics;
- The individual final essay requires students to have developed critical skills in analyzing technical problems with the tools provided by ethical theories and argumentation.
