Goals
The goal of the course is to enable students to design clear and effective communications. The course encompasses a number of formats, including: lectures by the teacher, laboratory classes (in which students design, revise and present projects and reports) and debate classes (in which students will be asked to defend thesis / antithesis).
Part of the course consists in the MOOC "Communication skills for the engineering scholar" by the instructor, available on Polimi Open Knowledge.
There is no specific reference text for the course: notes, handouts, papers and books’ excerpts will be provided during the course in digital form.

Students will learn the basics of communication sciences, rhetoric, argumentation theory and manipulation/propaganda.

Given a relatively complex communication task, students will be able to choose the most appropriate arguments, in relation to the context, the addressee(s) and the gaol.

Basics from Communication Sciences (6 hrs lectures, 4 hrs exercises):
Semiotics: the notion of sign and of signs’ systems
Linguistics: human languages and “intermediate” structures
Introduction to rhetoric (10 hrs lectures, 6 hrs exercises):
How to create a good “speech” (the 5 canons of rhetoric)
Verbal/non-verbal components in communication
Focus on the addressee: relevance, reference and common ground
How to deliver a good presentation (public speaking skills)
Argumentation theory (8 hrs lecture, 6 hrs exercises)
Introduction to the main forms of persuasive reasonings
introduction to phallacies (i.e. forms of reasoning only apparently correct)
Grant-writing (6 hrs lecture, 4 hrs exercises)

Assessment
The exam is meant to test both the ‘cognitive’ (learning the facts and basic information) and ‘application’ learning. A written test will be used to measure cognitive learning, while a project proposal (written paper plus a multimedia presentation) will allow measuring application of learning.
The written test is based on the background readings (60% of the final score).
By background readings the slides with their comments and the materials that are posted in the course’s website as the course unfolds are meant. Students are expected to be fully acquainted with all the background materials’ content and to be able to rephrase it in their own words.
The project proposal implies delivering a paper and a multimedia presentation. The project proposal accounts for 40% of the final score.
Students are also required to deliver the MOOC's final certificate, in order to complete the exam.
IMPORTANT:
for the project proposal, students are required, at the moment of submission, to also submit a short description of the communication scenario (who is the addressee, the goal, the context…) following a schema provided in the course’s website. Please be as accurate as possible.
The project proposal can be a group-work of up to 3 students.
