2. General presentation of the Study Programme

Within increasingly innovative design and construction processes, the construction sector is currently facing multidimensional challenges. These include the design of low-energy buildings capable of ensuring high levels of comfort and well-being for users; the development of low-impact, high-technology structures associated with climate-neutral buildings, clean construction, smart buildings and smart environments; and the need for buildings that are economically sustainable throughout their life cycle and resilient to exceptional events such as earthquakes and fire. In this context, user well-being and circularity in construction processes are essential priorities, further supported by digitalisation, which is transforming the entire sector from design and construction to operation and end-of-life management.

The Degree Programme in Building and Construction Engineering aims to educate engineers who combine a sound scientific background and specialised technical competences with a systemic and multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems and guiding transformations in the construction sector. Students acquire in-depth knowledge of the complexity of buildings, including building systems and components, building services, structures and environmental performance, and develop competences in managing design, construction, testing, operation, maintenance, transformation and decommissioning processes throughout the building life cycle. Particular attention is paid to environmental sustainability, user well-being and the promotion of the circular economy.

The building engineer therefore plays a key role in a rapidly evolving sector characterised by the integration of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 paradigms and by increasing digitalisation, both of which are essential for addressing current and future challenges.

Building and Construction Engineering (IEC) programme has the ambition to prepare new engineers to manage the complexity characterizing today buildings and their related design, construction, operation, maintenance processes, up to their further transformation or disposal at the end of buildings’ life cycle.

The IEC Programme provides a particularly suitable foundation for the Laurea Magistrale programmes offered in continuity by the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering: Building Engineering for Sustainability, taught in Italian and English at the Milano campus; Architectural Engineering, taught in English at the Lecco campus; and Management of Built Environment, taught in English at the Milano campus.

The first and second years focus on basic engineering subjects and building sciences. In the third year, the curriculum is enriched by courses in building engineering, construction engineering and technical and applied subjects. This educational offer is designed to guide students in choosing a Laurea Magistrale programme and/or to consolidate the initial competences of the building engineer, supporting immediate entry into the labour market as a building-production technician involved in the design, construction and operation of buildings.

For selected courses, the IEC curriculum adopts innovative teaching methods based on active learning and collaboration with companies, engineering firms, research bodies and institutions. During the third year, students also take part in activities aimed at developing transversal competences and enhancing their individual aptitudes. These include MOOCs available through the Polimi Open Knowledge platform, extracurricular and curricular seminars and workshops, some of which may be recognised as internship activities. Internship-preparation activities, including assessment exercises, and the internship itself, which may be carried out externally or within research groups, complete the educational offer.


3. Learning objectives

At the end of a Degree Programme belonging to Degree Class L-23 – Building Sciences and Technologies, including Building and Construction Engineering, graduates must be able to:

  • master the relevant analytical and knowledge-based aspects, understand the applicable methodological and operational approaches, and use specific methods, techniques and tools appropriately;
  • understand buildings in terms of their morphological, typological and functional, structural, building-services, material and technological characteristics, in relation to the climatic, physical and environmental, socio-economic and production context and to the evolving dynamics of the construction sector;
  • to know, understand and represent buildings in their morphological, typological-functional, structural and geotechnical, plant, materic and technological characteristics, in relation to the physical-environmental, socio-economic and productive context and in accordance with the evolving trends of the construction sector;
  • formulate and solve problems concerning buildings, structural, building and building-services systems and components, and the built environment in general, using appropriate and innovative tools and techniques;
  • apply theoretical and practical knowledge across the different fields of construction activity, ensuring professional flexibility in responding to labour-market needs.

The main objective of the Degree Programme is to educate professionals corresponding to the internationally established profile of the Building Engineer, also referred to in some contexts as the Architectural Engineer.

The need for this profile arises from the complexity of the design, operational, organizational and management problems that characterize the construction sector and require engineers with a new cultural, scientific and technical knowledge. The BSc Programme in Building and Construction Engineering aims in particular to guarantee its students a solid preparation for:

  • the engineering development of design solutions, with particular regard to technological aspects, including the building envelope, structures, mechanical and electrical systems; performance requirements, including energy consumption, comfort, health, safety and durability; and operational and construction-site aspects;
  • the engineering of the building process, from design through procurement, construction, testing, operation, maintenance and decommissioning;
  • safety engineering during design and construction;
  • design validation, works supervision and the control of technical and administrative processes;
  • the management of digital information flows throughout the building process using BIM-based approaches;
  • the design of innovative building materials and components and the control of the related production processes according to the principles of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0.
  • architectural design support activity.

IEC graduates possess the competences required to undertake professional activities in different fields, contributing to the planning, design, construction and control of works and to the management of new construction and built-environment transformation projects at different scales. The knowledge and competences acquired enable building engineers to adapt to evolving methods, techniques, tools and technologies in the construction sector and related fields.


4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)


Building and Construction Engineering degree grants access to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master).

Graduate students in Building and Construction Engineering can continue their studies in many Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes related to the construction industry. The access to a specific Laurea Magistrale programmes depends on fulfilment of the its admission criteria.

Within the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, the Laurea Magistrale programmes offered in continuity with the IEC Programme are Building Engineering for Sustainability, taught in Italian and English at the Milano campus; Architectural Engineering, taught in English at the Lecco campus; and Management of Built Environment, taught in English at the Milano campus.


5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

After passing the Italian State Examination, holders of the Laurea may register in Section B, Civil and Environmental sector, of the Italian Register of Engineers, with the professional title of Junior Engineer, pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 328/2001.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

There are many job opportunities for IEC graduate students:

  • Engineering and architecture firms;
  • Consulting firms in building technology, building systems, health and safety, fire engineering, quality systems, …;
  • Construction and maintenance companies;
  • Building product and component industries;
  • Public administrations;
  • Insurance companies;
  • Technical offices for big private clients;
  • Different fields as freelance and researcher.

5.3 Qualification profile

The graduate in Building and Construction Engineering will have a technical-scientific background and adequate skills to independently manage construction projects and processes of medium complexity or to be integrated into multidisciplinary teams of design, process management and management of the built environment. In detail, the Construction Engineer will be prepared for: 

  • survey, analysis, technical and economic evaluation, representation of buildings and built environment;
  • performance modelling for identification and optimization of design alternatives (design strategies, building components and systems, structural components) to ensure safety, environmental quality, high comfort levels, low environmental impact, low energy consumption;
  • technological, structural and service systems design (preliminary, detail and for construction);
  • design resilient building, optimization of design alternatives to slow down degradation processes and to stop building collapse restraining their causes;
  • construction management, the economic assessment and management of building project or areas development project, management of technical-administrative processes, management of production processes;
  • health and safety engineering in building and infrastructure projects.

The building and construction engineer will be able to use the most advanced tools that ICT innovation provides for the construction sector, from parametric design software to digital process management software.

Skills of this function
The graduate student in Building and Construction Engineering is a junior engineer with a basic knowledge for the design, construction, management and maintenance and restoration of buildings.

In deep, the graduate in Building and Construction Engineering is a junior engineer with a basic preparation for the design of the building and its parts (building systems and components, structures, systems), for the construction, operation, maintenance, refurbishment and decommissioning at the end of its life cycle. The construction engineer will be able to use the acquired skills relevant to:

- construction materials, building and plant components and systems, and structures, and their behaviour under varying stresses and conditions of use;

- methods, tools and techniques for modelling (at macro scale, at building scale and building system scale, plant engineering and structural) and for validation (at design stage, in laboratory, on site) of performance;

- tools and techniques for the representation and construction of digital models;

- programming techniques and parametric software (computational design for architecture);

- methods, tools and techniques for information management, site management, site planning and control at the execution stage;

- methods, tools and techniques for diagnostics, refurbishment and upgrading of buildings, maintenance and facility management.


6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

Admission to the Laurea Programme in Building and Construction Engineering requires an Italian upper-secondary school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad and recognised as suitable.

Admission is subject to taking the TOL – Engineering Online Test and obtaining a position within the available places in the ranking list, in accordance with the conditions, score thresholds and deadlines established by the University’s annual call for applications.

The test is also used to assess students’ initial preparation. If the result is insufficient in specific sections, Additional Learning Requirements may be assigned and must be fulfilled according to the procedures and deadlines established by the University.

6.2 Requested knowledge

To successfully undertake the programme, students are expected to possess basic knowledge of mathematics, physics and verbal comprehension, together with appropriate logical and analytical skills. Initial preparation is assessed through the TOL – Engineering Online Test, in accordance with the structure and procedures defined annually by the University.

Knowledge of English at the level established by Politecnico di Milano is also required. It is assessed through the TENG test, including for students who already hold external language certificates, in accordance with University regulations.

POK – Polimi Open Knowledge is the University’s portal for Massive Open Online Courses. It offers free online courses open to all users and is intended to support students at key stages of their educational and professional pathways, from upper-secondary school to university, from Laurea to Laurea Magistrale, and from university to employment.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

To obtain the Laurea in Building and Construction Engineering, students must acquire 180 ECTS credits, complete all the educational activities included in their study plan, complete the curricular internship and pass the final examination.


According to Law No. 33 of April 12, 2022, simultaneous enrollment in two programs is allowed. Enrollment in two programs is possible only if they are of different degree classes (classi di laurea) and differ in at least two-thirds of their educational activities regarding academic credits. 

Consistent with what is defined by Law No. 33, at the student's instance, the maximum number of CFUs already taken in the other program and validatable is 60 CFUs for BSc programmes.

7.2 Mode of study

Teaching activities include lectures, exercises, design activities, computer-based and experimental laboratories, seminars, workshops, technical visits and internship activities.

Courses in the first two years are mainly organised through lectures and exercises, while third-year courses feature stronger integration between theoretical content, design activities and laboratory work.

Any attendance requirements are specified in the course description and communicated at the beginning of the teaching activities. Attendance at internship activities and at any recognised substitute activities is compulsory in accordance with the relevant regulations.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

In the IEC Laurea Programme, the traditional scientific foundations provided by mathematics, geometry, physics, chemistry, history of architecture and drawing are integrated with core subjects in building and construction engineering, including building physics, the chemistry and physics of materials and their in-service behaviour, structural mechanics and construction management. Specialist subjects such as programming, economics and applied hydraulics complete the first two years of the Programme.

On this basis, training is developed in disciplines relating to building engineering and building sciences and techniques, the content of which concerns the quality of the built environment (with appropriate references to the psychophysiology of thermal, acoustic and light wellbeing), environmental impact, building and construction technologies, technological services, maintenance and refurbishment, structural design, aspects related to building production, management of the building process, economic, operational, organisational and legal aspects.

The first two years are mainly based on theoretical courses combining lectures and exercises, while third-year courses in construction and building engineering include lectures, exercises and integrated laboratory activities centred on the design of a building.

In the third year, the curriculum is enriched by specific applied content in building engineering concerning quality control in indoor and outdoor spaces, including thermal, acoustic and visual comfort; safety; mitigation of the environmental impact of buildings; the design of high-efficiency buildings; high-performance building systems and efficient building services; structural design; building production; management of the building process; economic, operational and organisational aspects; maintenance; and refurbishment.

Throughout the Programme, students have numerous opportunities to engage with the world of work through seminars and meetings within technical and applied courses, courses developed in collaboration with companies and engineering firms, workshops, compulsory internship-preparation activities offered in both semesters of the third year and including assessment exercises, and curricular and extracurricular internships. The internship is a qualifying component of the curriculum, designed to develop practical competences and facilitate initial contact with the labour market through the direct involvement of companies, professional practices and public or private bodies.

The Degree Programme is structured to educate professionals who, through their multidisciplinary preparation, can identify problems and develop appropriate design solutions, keeping pace with innovation in the construction sector and contributing to improved building quality and safety from physical, technical, performance-based, procedural and economic perspectives.

7.4 Foreign language

English is the only foreign language required of students enrolling in the IEC Degree Programme. The minimum required level is assessed as part of the admission-testing procedure. Students must take the English-language section of the TOL even if they already hold external certificates attesting to their knowledge of English.

7.5 Degree examination

The final examination assesses the knowledge and competences acquired by the student through the preparation and subsequent presentation of a final paper.

Students may complete the final examination in one of the following two forms:

  • Type A Final Examination: presentation and discussion of a monographic dissertation;
  • Type B Final Examination: presentation and discussion of a research paper or final report.

The Graduation exam consists of:

  • short presentation, by the undergraduate to the Commission, of the personal study carried out;

  • short interrogation by the Commission on subjects of the CdS

Access to the final exam is subject to attendance of an online MOOCs course (soft skill project). The student can select one of the following courses from the POLIMI Open Knowledge Platform (https://www.pok.polimi.it/):

2. Managing conflict/Managing conflicts (From University to job), in Italian or English

3. Working in Multidisciplinary Teams (From University to job), only in English

11. International context

Laurea Programmes in the field of building engineering are available in many educational programmes of European and non-European universities that have an educational system similar to Italian system (3 years + 2 years Msc).

In some Countries, the Degree curriculum is provided within the Civil Engineering Programmes.

In other Countries, as in Spain, similar degrees are provided with a different educational system (4 years + 1 years).

Politecnico is carrying out comparative analysis with the main international universities which results will be soon available on Politecnico di Milano's website.

12. Internationalization

International Mobility

The Politecnico di Milano offers the students various opportunities to spend periods studying abroad. The credits (ECTS) acquired, subject to the approval of a Learning Agreement, are recognized as an integral part of the curriculum.

International mobility may be for study (a) or a Double Degree (b):

a) period of study at partner universities in EU countries (Erasmus) and non-EU countries (bilateral agreements);

b) Double Degree projects with EU and non-EU universities.

Aside from these opportunities, international mobility  periods of variable lengths and natures are also possible, within international networks which the Politecnico is part of (Alliance4Tech, Athens, Idea League, UniTech).

The mobility for study generally lasts one term. It is potentially extendable, if allowed by the agreement with the partner university, for a further term, subject to authorization from the School Bodies (the Politecnico Teachers who promote the mobility for the partner university).

International mobility: polimi

During the mobility for study, it is possible to acquire credits (ECTS) and/or carry out part of the thesis at the partner university. This opportunity for some universities is specified in the call and is coordinated by the proposing professor; where it is not specified, students may nominate a co-supervisor in the partner university, as long as the objectives and content are agreed with the supervisor, who must be a professor of the Politecnico di Milano. The final discussion of the thesis must take place at the Politecnico di Milano.

Students who take part in the Double Degree programme will obtain the Degree title from the Politecnico di Milano as well as from the partner university, after having acquired a total of 150 or 180 ECTS credits - according to the agreement - across the two universities.  Following the discussion of the thesis - in the ways agreed with the partner university - students will be awarded with two degree with two separate marks.

The exams sat abroad are validated in the ways posted on the AUIC School’s website which involve a weighted score conversion tool.

Students who have carried out a period of international mobility for study abroad during their Laurea (Bachelor of Science) can apply again during their Laurea Magistrale (Master of Science).

International mobility is supported by both the Politecnico and the European Union with the payment of a scholarship, the amount of which varies from year to year.

In order to be able to participate in international mobility programmes, either for study or for Double Degrees, students must submit their applications via the call for International Mobility, posted periodically on the Politecnico website and on the AUIC School’s website

Students selected for mobility cannot carry out the exchange during the first term of their first year of their Master Programme.

The selected students must agree with the Professor of Politecnico, Promoter of the partnered university where they have been assigned, a Learning Agreement, i.e. a Study Plan equivalent to the teachings at the foreign university.

The Politecnico does not require a minimum number of ECTS credits, though this may depend on the partner university or on administrative restrictions to obtain a visa that may be necessary for non-EU countries. 

When returning from the mobility for study, a maximum of 42 credits of teachings obtained abroad can be validated.

For students with previous career, the total sum of the credits from previous career and from international mobilitry cannot overcome the number of 112 credits.

For students wishing to develop a thesis abroad – typically for a shorter period than that offered by other forms of mobility – financial support is available through the ‘Tesi all'estero’ grant, which is advertised on the websites of the Politecnico di Milano and the AUIC School.

 International Mobility for Internships

The Erasmus+ for Traineeship Programme allows students to do an internship (which can replace the obligatory internship, or as an optional internship or post-graduate internship) in Europe of a minimum duration of 2 months thanks to a scholarship funded by the European Commission. https://cm.careerservice.polimi.it/career-program/erasmus-for-traineeship/

 

“FREE MOVER" mobility

Students who carry out an international mobility by organizing their own study period abroad are defined as "free movers".

This international mobility is not linked to an exchange program organized by Politecnico di Milano.

The freemover mobility must be approved, for the purpose of the recognition of credits and further constraints, by a referent of your course of study and will be recognized only the activities of:

- teaching attendance

- performance of thesis work

13. Quantitative data

The Didactic Observation Unit and the Evaluation Nucleus perform periodic analysis on the overall results analysing the teaching activities and the integration of graduates into the work world. Reports and studies are available on the website of the Politecnico di MIlano.

The University’s Study Services and Assessment Unit periodically analyse student careers, the outcomes of educational activities, perceived quality and graduates’ entry into the labour market. The principal data and reports are published on the University website and are used by the Degree Programme as part of its quality-assurance and review processes.

14. Further information

14.1 Personal study plan and / or courses as extra

The Degree Programme does not allow students to submit individual study plans. However, students who do not meet the standard study-plan requirements, including students transferring from another programme or coming from a previous academic career, may submit a request to amend their study plan.

No more than 32 ECTS credits acquired through extra courses and single courses may be recognised for the purposes of a subsequent Laurea Magistrale career.

Students may include up to 30 ECTS credits in extra courses only after all first- and second-year examinations have been recorded, or after at least 120 ECTS credits have been recorded in their academic career.

14.2 Additional educational obligations (OFA)

Having OFA (additional educational obligations) means that some parts of your academic preparation are not up to standards.

Students with outstanding Additional Learning Requirements may not submit a second-year study plan.

14.3 Pre-requisites

Pre-requisites are intended to avoid students approaching courses with a lack of curricular requirements, knowledge and skills foreseen in the design of the teaching regulations and of individual courses. It is not a question of bureaucratic restrictions but rather assistance in correct fruition of the courses. 14.4 Transfers and passages

Requests for course transfer (students already enrolled in other courses at the Polytechnic of Milan and for students who have not yet expired belonging to deactivated study courses) or transfer (students coming from other universities) with evaluation of their previous career must be presented according to the methods and deadlines established by the University

14.5 Workshop Activities

The workshop activities are:

- "Internship workshops", accredited as internship activities and therefore "professionalizing" (3 credits).

In relation to graduation sessions, workshops completed at least one month before the student's chosen graduation session will be credited for career purposes.

It will not be possible to accredit a workshop carried out during the three-year degree course within the master's degree, or if the workshop was carried out as a supernumerary activity during the three-year degree course, request its recognition in the new master's career.
