2. General presentation of the study programmeBeing conceived more than thirty years ago, the role of the management engineer has been perceived as an engineer of change and innovation. This role is similar to the classical engineer, being responsible of designing and managing systems, which complexity is due to the human element and the close interaction between technological, economic, organisational and financial variables. The management engineering course project was inspired by a new professional profile - the engineer-manager – that was translated into a clearly defined and consistent university curriculum. This programme has been continuously updated, modifying and improving the offered subjects, in order to meet the requirements of companies and other institutions where he/she will be employed and to retain the cutting-edge innovative knowledge associated with this professional profile.
The over 15,000 management engineers graduated from the Politecnico di Milano are now everywhere, testifying to the extremely favorable reception that the market has reserved and continues to reserve for this professional figure. They are strongly present in industrial companies, service companies (telecommunications, transport, etc.), consulting firms, financial institutions, banks and insurance companies, authorities, public administration, and non-profit organizations. Our graduates operate in an extremely wide range of activities, including, for example: technology and production planning, planning and management of production-logistics systems, strategic planning and marketing, management control and organization, regulation of competition and network service sectors, relations with authorities, market finance and corporate finance, management of large projects (manufacturing and process plants, infrastructure, R&D), Internet applications and information and communication technologies.

3. Learning objectivesThe Master of Science (MSc) in Management Engineering (equivalent to Laurea Magistrale in Management Engineering) is a study programme that aims to achieve two complementary objectives. Firstly, it aims to develop a unitary professional profile relying on a common body of knowledge, methods, and procedures. Secondly, it aims to train qualified professionals with a range of skills that can satisfy the requirements of the different companies and institutions where management engineers will work, both in traditional and innovative fields.
Moving from these premises, the MSc in Management Engineering aims students to achieve five Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO). Specifically, Management Engineering students will learn to:
- understand challenges, functions, and processes in a business and industrial environment and their mutual effects on business, economy, environment and society;
- identify trends, technologies, key methodologies and stakeholder needs in a specific domain (specialization majors);
- design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modeling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) coupled with participatory approaches to face problems and opportunities in a business, industrial and societal environment;
- develop new ideas and transformative solutions to deliver a positive impact on business, industrial and societal scenarios evolving over time;
- interact in a professional, responsible, inclusive, effective and constructive way in a working environment, also motivating group members.
The educational project focuses on developing a strong culture of problem-solving and modeling, based on strict qualitative and quantitative methodologies. It involves interactive teaching methods that encourage teamwork, and high-profile guest speakers from industry and service, the finance and consultancy sectors. Additionally, it envisages a continuous updating of teaching methods and case studies to enrich the educational experience.

The Master of Science in Management Engineering is a unified program, where all majors share a common course platform that forms the foundation of the Degree Programme.
The first year includes common subjects that help establish the fundamental knowledge a management engineer requires.
The second year is articulated in 14 majors that provide a diverse range of competencies to cater to the needs of companies and institutions where management engineers will work. Each major comprises 25 characterizing subjects and 20 elective subjects that students can opt for based on the professional role they want to pursue.
To ensure the interdisciplinary nature of the MSc program, students must earn at least 10 ECTS through subjects belonging to disciplinary sectors (SSD) other than characterizing sectors (ING-IND 35; ING-IND 17; ING-IND 16). This is in line with Politecnico di Milano's general educational guidelines, which follow the "T-shaped" training model, i.e., the Bachelor of Science aims to provide deep domain competence, while the Master of Science aims to develop horizontal and broad competence.

7.3.2 Internal Double Master of Science Degree
The Internal Double Master of Science degree programmes are joint programmes developed in cooperation with another Study Course to integrate the management engineer competence profile with different disciplines to answer to the needs of some specific sectors through a new professional profile.
In the 2025/2026 academic year, the Internal Double Master of Science degree in Management Engineering - Product-Service System Design will be run. The preventively approved study plan (valid for achieving the master of Science degree in Management Engineering) is presented below. Additional information is available in the Teaching Regulation of the Internal Double Master of Science degree. The description of the study programme is available here: https://www.ingindinf.polimi.it/en/corsi/internal-double-degrees
7.3.3 POLIMI Ambassador Green Technologies
Politecnico aims to create a new professional profile, the Ambassador in Green Technologies. This is an MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and a specific aptitude for innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of the economy. The Ambassador in Green Technologies profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced and specialized skills in specific applications (infrastructures) and/or enabling technologies (smart), and transversal skills complementary to the above-mentioned specialized skills. These skills will allow him/her to broaden his/her knowledge in the smart infrastructures domain and to adopt a systemic approach to the design, management, innovation, and study of the life cycle of green technologies.
The training program is articulated within the MSc educational path. The minimum number of ECTS credits necessary to complete the MSc course and qualify for the PoliMI Ambassador in Green Technologies certification is 130 (including at least ten extra credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements). As part of the training course, students must select 1) at least 30 ECTS from the two Tables below, 2) 8 to 13 ECTS from Table A, and 3) 18 to 24 ECTS from Table B.
To obtain recognition of a course for the Ambassador qualification, at least one of the following conditions must be met:
- The course selected from Table A or B must be listed in the Manifesto of the Academic Year of application.
- The course selected from Table A or B must be present in the tables for the same Academic Year of attendance (i.e., in the study plan for the course). However, it is not necessary for the course to be taken in that Academic Year.
