2. General presentation of the study programme

The growing technological complexity that characterises modern agro-industrial production and supply chains requires professionals with strong engineering knowledge and systems skills. More than in other fields, there is a clear need for a strong multidisciplinary approach to managing technological innovation in agriculture and animal production, especially to increase the level of sustainability and ensure food safety. The use of the most advanced technologies, within the context of Agriculture 4.0, is necessary in order to allow the national agricultural production system to gain competitiveness in terms of yield, to cope with growing problems deriving from climate change, first and foremost scarcity of water resources, and to manage crops and livestock in an environmentally friendly manner.

The Agricultural Engineering teaching programme focuses on the agricultural supply chain and on agro-industrial production, paying particular attention to the technological aspects of the agro-industrial system and its safety, to automation and mechanical technologies, to agricultural sciences and precision agriculture, to information systems, and to environmental and chemical technologies. The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) in Agricultural Engineering therefore trains engineers operating in the agro-industrial sector who possess a systems engineering vision, i.e. an approach to the study and implementation of solutions based on an overall vision of the technological aspects of the elements of the supply chain, and on an ability to model and manage interactions between its various components. To do this, the graduate uses advanced, cross-cutting engineering skills backed by a basic knowledge of the agricultural sector, allowing him or her to guide strategic choices in the sector of primary agro-industrial production.

Graduates in Agricultural Engineering interact competently with the various players along the supply chain. Moreover, they understand and organise technical, managerial and economic activities also in sectors relating to different specialisations. This systems engineering vision, supported by technical and scientific skills and knowledge, is also important for favouring access to natural resources and sustainable management of production processes. From this standpoint, the figure of a Laurea Magistrale graduate with cross-functional skills, an overall vision of issues related to the agro-industrial chain, and a particular eye for safety, represents a great opportunity for the sector, for the country in general but in particular for the Cremona Campus catchment area.

In practical terms, examples of applications of Agricultural Engineering include: the evaluation and use of available technologies to guarantee the sustainability, safety and traceability of agro-industrial productions; the design and integration of automation, monitoring and agricultural robotics systems; the use of big data analytics and artificial intelligence applications with a view to improving yields and control over security requirements; the design of smart irrigation systems capable of optimising the use of water resources and guaranteeing their availability, also and above all in the face of the serious problems posed by climate change; the optimal economic management of farms and the associated supply chain.

3. Learning objectives

The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) in Agricultural Engineering trains specialist engineers capable of dealing with the complex systems of the agro-industrial chain and the interdependence of critical elements related to the safety of the agri-food system, such as:

  • planning and managing production and supply chain systems;
  • emerging technologies supporting production;
  • interaction with the environment and the territory.

In order to do so, graduates use cross-sectoral engineering skills on the system as a whole, which allow them to guide strategic choices with the support of more specialised figures, whom they do not replace.

The graduate is therefore a skilled figure able to understand and solve typical industrial engineering problems, contextualised in the agricultural and agro-industrial field, with particular attention to food and process safety, through knowledge of the technological and managerial aspects of the agricultural supply chain, from production to storage and distribution, and focusing on the issues of traceability and product safety. The graduate integrates and supports these skills with a methodological approach typical of information engineering, through the application of techniques and methods for analysing large amounts of data (big data analytics), artificial intelligence methods and applications, and the most advanced monitoring, automation and control techniques, assessing their applicability in managing production systems and improving processes from the point of view of safety and economic and environmental sustainability.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

For students already in possession of a first-level Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science), the Study Programme in Agricultural Engineering bestows a 2nd level Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) after a two-year period corresponding to 120 credits.

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)

A special commission, made up of members of the Study Programme Board of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) in Agricultural Engineering, will conduct an assessment of the student’s personal level of training.

Any curricular supplements in terms of ECTS credits must be acquired prior to verification of the individual’s training, as enrolment with additional educational debits is not permitted.

Curricular supplements and enrolment in single courses

In the event of curricular supplements being allocated, during the period between obtaining the Laurea and enrolling in the Laurea Magistrale, the graduate may, by enrolling in "single courses":

  1. acquire ECTS credits by passing Laurea Magistrale exams through enrolment in Laurea Magistrale courses as "single courses" (these are "advanced" ECTS credits that can be recognised as part of the 120 credits required to achieve the Laurea Magistrale);
  2. acquire attendance of the Laurea Magistrale courses (see above);
  3. acquire ECTS credits related to curricular supplements established by the special Laurea Magistrale Admission Commission (these are ECTS credits "in addition" to the 120 credits required to achieve the Laurea Magistrale).

The following constraints are worth noting:

  1. The total ECTS credits (passing of exams and/or acquisition of attendance) that can be recognised as part of the 120 credits required to achieve the Laurea Magistrale cannot exceed 32 ECTS; any additional ECTS in excess of 32 may be used as extra courses;
  2. In any case, the number of ECTS credits acquired through "single courses" cannot exceed 80, inclusive of curricular supplements.

Failure to complete the curricular supplements requested within 18 months of being allocated by the relevant Commission and communicated to the applicant results in the student definitively forfeiting the right to admission.

7.4 Foreign language

An adequate knowledge of a foreign language is an essential pre-requisite for admission to the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science).

Considering the University's course offering, in this case the language required is English. When applying for admission, levels of English language proficiency must be certified by achieving minimum score levels in tests recognised by the University, which are also available on the University and School websites.

For more information on English language proficiency:
www.polimi.it/en/current-students/language-requirements-english-and-italian

7.5 Degree examination

The graduation exam consists in students presenting and discussing their dissertation, drawn up independently. This final exam offers students a further opportunity to deepen and verify their ability to analyse, process and communicate their knowledge. It requires students to discuss their dissertation before a commission. This activity is compulsorily coordinated by a university professor acting as supervisor.
