2. General presentation of the study programme

Being conceived more than thirty years ago, the role of the management engineer has been perceived as an engineer of change and innovation. This role is similar to the classical engineer, being responsible of designing and managing systems, which complexity is due to the human element and the close interaction between technological, economic, organisational and financial variables. The management engineering course project was inspired by a new professional profile - the engineer-manager – that was translated into a clearly defined and consistent university curriculum. This programme has been continuously updated, modifying and improving the offered subjects, in order to meet the requirements of companies and other institutions where he/she will be employed and to retain the cutting-edge innovative knowledge associated with this professional profile.

More than 15,000 management engineers have graduated from Politecnico di Milano since this degree course was introduced and the different paths they have followed demonstrate the appreciation of the labour market for this professional qualification.

Today, a management engineer faces a wide range of professional opportunities in many different sectors. Furthermore, over the years, the programme has acquired a large array of specializations to match market needs and changes dictated by technical progress, innovation and economic globalisation.

3. Learning objectives

An articulated study programme, with two complementary objectives, characterizes the Master of Science in Management Engineering (equivalent to Laurea Magistrale in Management Engineering) (MSc). On the one hand, the study programme aims at developing - through a common body of knowledge, methods and procedures – a unitary professional profile. On the other hand, it aims at training qualified professionals with a range of skills able to satisfy the requirements coming from different companies and institutions where management engineers will work, both in traditional and innovative fields.

Moving from these premises, the MSc in Management Engineering aims to develop in students five Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO), whereupon the management, economics and industrial engineer will be able to:

  • Understand the context, the functions, the processes and the impact of those factors on company performance;
  • Identify key trends, technologies and methodologies in specific environments;
  • Design solutions by applying a scientific and engineering approach to tackle problems and opportunities within the corporate and industrial context;
  • Develop new ideas and solutions within an evolving corporate and industrial context;
  • Interact professionally, responsibly, effectively and constructively with colleagues in the work environment, motivating team members as well

As set out hereunder, the educational project envisages, beside a solid modelling and problem-solving culture, founded on strict quantitative and qualitative methodologies, an interactive teaching, with teamwork engagements and high-profile testimonials from representatives of the world of industry and services, finance and consultancy. It furthermore envisages an ongoing updating of methods and case studies that enrich the various teaching programmes. 


4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The MSc in Management Engineering is a two years course providing a total of 120 credits (ECTS).

The most worthy students attending the Master of Science in Management Engineering have the opportunity to participate in the following initiatives:

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)


The most natural progression is to a Doctorate degree in Management Engineering. 5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The Master of Science in Management Engineering (Law 270/04) belongs to LM/31 Class (Engineering Management) which enables the participation to the State examination for the professional qualification in Section A of the Engineers Register in the Industrial Engineering and in the Information Engineering areas.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

The Master of Science in Management Engineering is characterized by a close relationship with the business world.

More than 15,000 management engineers have graduated from Politecnico di Milano since this degree course was introduced. The many diverse paths they have followed demonstrate the appreciation of the labour market for this professional qualification, recognizing the flexibility shown by graduates when working also in activities not initially covered or considered when the course was designed.

A survey, carried out by the Nucleo di Valutazione on a yearly basis, shows that the 90% of the graduates have an employment after only 6 months from the graduation and this figure reaches the 97% in the following months.

Management Engineer - Laurea Magistrale

Highly qualified professional profile able to work in different organizations (companies, public bodies, non-profit organizations), with particular attention to entrepreneurship, innovation, and systemic management of complex issues (multi-objective systems, multi-stakeholders, characterized by high levels of uncertainty and a dynamic nature)

  • identify trends, technologies and key methodologies in relation to a specific context (specialization by stream),

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

First cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification


The admission to the MSc programme undergoes an evaluation process aimed to determine the eligibility of the applicant.

Such process, in compliance to the existing regulation (D.M. 22/10/2004 n. 270 art. 6 par. 2 and D.M. 16/3/2007, art.6 par. 1), is based upon curriculum requirements and an assessment of the preparation of the student.

The final decision about the admission to the MSc programme shall be taken by an Evaluation Commission set up for this purpose by the School Council which will analyze the application according to the academic career of the candidate and the admission requirements. The lack of the admission requirements is sufficient motivation to reject the application, unless valid documentation showing clear exceptional conditions, specifically related to severe health issue of the applicant and showing, in any case, that the student has an adequate preparation for the programme. The documentation showing the existence of clear exceptional conditions shall be submitted attached to a written request to be submittet to the Student Secretary.

If the applicant is admitted, any potential compulsory subject to be chosen in the curricula and/or potential additional subjects shall be communicated for each curriculum together with the admission and before enrolment, in order to provide students with the necessary information for a transparent and rational choice.

Requirements concerning the English language proficiency levels are presented in Paragraph 7.4.


6.1.1 Application for admission while studying for a Bachelor in Science degree or after obtaining a Bachelor in Science degree


Mandatory requirements for requesting the evaluation of the career are as follows:

  • students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science programme at Politecnico di Milano are required to be enrolled to the Graduation session;
  • students enrolled in Bachelor of Science programmes in other Universities are required to complete the ECTS mandatory for the completion of the programme (with the only exception of the final exam) and graduate before enrolling to the MSc programme (Laurea Magistrale);
  • or, everyone is required to hold a Bachelor of Science Degree.

 

Mandatory requirements for being admitted to the programme are as follows:

  1. graduation at the Bachelor of Science no later than 31 March of the fifth year after the first enrolment (for example if the first enrolment was September 2017, the degree should be obtained before March 31, 2022);
  2. GPA not below the “adjusted” admission threshold (please see Paragraph 6.1.1.2);
  3. certification of the English language proficiency (please see Paragraph 7.4);
  4. having qualifications which do not require any further prerequisites.

 

If the requirements stated at either point 1) or 2) of the above list are not satisfied, the applicant will not be admitted to the MSc programme. If the requirements stated at either point 3) or 4) of the above list are not satisfied, the applicant will be accepted to the MSc programme and enrolled, after having satisfied these conditions, by demonstrating his/her proficiency in English and/or obtaining the necessary prerequisites identified by the Commission and communicated to the applicant.


6.1.1.1 Number of years for achieving the Bachelor


The number of years for achieving the Bachelor of Science is determined starting from the year of first enrolment (in any University) to the end of the academic curriculum - i.e. when all 180 credits of the Bachelor of Science have been awarded, including the final work, the language exam and, when requested, the curriculum-based in-company training period (in other words, when evaluating this requirement, the School calculates all the years required for the completion of the academic curriculum).

The number of years required to achieve the Bachelor of Science is indicated as follows with "N".
For sake of clarification, N can assume the following values:
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2018 and will earn their BSc degree no later than September 2021 (6 semesters): N = 3
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2018 and will earn their BSc degree no later than February 2022 (7 semesters): N = 3,5
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2017 and will earn their BSc degree no later than September 2021 (8 semesters): N = 4
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2017 and will earn their BSc degree no later than February 2022 (9 semesters): N = 4,5

6.1.1.2 "Adjusted" admission threshold


Students who earned their Bachelor of Science degree with a score lower than the “adjusted” admission threshold will not be admitted to attend to the Master of Science in Management Engineering.

 

For the 2021-2022 academic year, for candidates with a Bachelor of Science issued by Politecnico di Milano, the “adjusted” threshold is calculated based on the following formula:

6.1.1.3 English Proficiency

6.1.1.4 Admission without prerequisites


An applicant can be admitted to the Master of Science in Management Engineering when his/her Bachelor of Science degree programme is evaluated as being “consistent” with the study programme of the Master of Science degree course. These requirements are verified by the Evaluation Commission, which also ascertains the need of imposing any prerequisite (i.e. additional compulsory modules) to fill possible gaps.

6.2 Requested knowledge

In order to be accepted to the Master of Science in Management Engineering, applicants must have acquired a knowledge base that is consistent with the study programme offered in the degree course. The evaluation of the adequacy of this knowledge base uses as a reference framework the programme of the Bachelor of Science degree course in Management Engineering. This means that any prerequisite that is required to prospect students derives either from a lack of “consistency” with the applicant’s Bachelor of Science degree course.

Because of the wide and varied background of the graduates applying for a Master in Science degree, it is only possible to define beforehand the admission requirements for the majority of cases and in particular for graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. In all other cases, applicants must sit a purpose specific examination on the curricula in order to ensure that only applicants having the necessary requirements of “consistency” with the study programme of the Master of Science degree are admitted, and possible gaps are integrated through prerequisites and course restrictions.

 

Any prerequisites communicated by the Commission to the applicant during the assessment of his/her application must be completed before applying for matriculation to the Master of Science degree course. The relative procedures are presented in the Paragraph 6.2.1.

 

On the base of the criteria previously expressed, conditions for admission to the Master of Science degree course for students coming from different backgrounds are stated below:

 

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano: No prerequisites are required. There are no course restrictions.

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering from other Italian universities: No prerequisites are required, but students are required  to pass all the MOOCs that are part of the library “Introduction to Management Engineering Series”, provided free of charge through the Polimi Open Knowledge (POLIMI POK) platform, and consisting of 5 programmes (see Paragraph 6.2.2).

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering other than Management Engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan or any other Italian university: No prerequisites are required, but students are required  to pass all the MOOCs that are part of the library “Introduction to Management Engineering Series”, provided free of charge through the Polimi Open Knowledge (POLIMI POK) platform, and consisting of 5 programmes (see Paragraph 6.2.2).

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, information technologies, physical and mathematical disciplines: No prerequisites are required, but students are required  to pass all the MOOCs that are part of the library “Introduction to Management Engineering Series”, provided free of charge through the Polimi Open Knowledge (POLIMI POK) platform, and consisting of 5 programmes (see Paragraph 6.2.2).

  • Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline other than those specified previously
    The Evaluation Commission will ascertain the necessary requirements and define any prerequisites or restrictions Any prerequisite must be attained according to Paragraph 6.2.1.

 

  • Further degrees (for applicants who have already gained a Master of Science degree or the equivalent as defined in previous Teaching Regulations)
    The Evaluation Commission will carry out an individual assessment based upon documentation of the applicant’s educational background submitted to them. Please note that any work experiences, including documented ones, cannot be taken into account.

6.2.1 Procedures for the application of prerequisites


An applicant who has been assigned any prerequisites may attend individual courses, in the period before the enrolment to the Master of Science. The following three opportunities exist:

  • B1) earn credits by passing courses at the Master of Science level (individual courses); these “early” credits can be used towards the 120 credits necessary for the Master of Science degree.
  • B2) earn the attendance of courses at the Master of Science level. As per B1, but without passing the exam.
  • B3) earn credits related to additional compulsory modules as requested by the Evaluation Commission for the Master of Science These credits cannot be accounted under the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree.

 

Furthermore, the following restrictions are in force:

  1. the total amount of credits (by passing exams or only attending courses) that can be accounted under the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree (B1+B2) cannot exceed 32. Credits in excess of 32 could be only considered as overnumber (soprannumero).
  2. in any case, the total amount of credits earned by passing “individual courses” cannot exceed 80, including credits earned under B3.

If an applicant does not complete any prerequisites imposed and communicated to him/her by the Evaluation Commission within 15 months, he or she forfeits his/her right to admission totally and completely.


6.2.2 Course restrictions (compulsory modules and exclusions)


Except for the first level graduates in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, all the candidates admitted to the MSc programme – if needed, after curricular supplements - are required  to pass the online library programmes “Introduction to Management Engineering Series”, provided free of charge through the Polimi Open Knowledge (POLIMI POK) platform, and consisting of 5 programmes:

  • Fundamentals of Financial and Management Accounting
  • Fundamental of Strategy
  • Fundamental of Organization
  • Fundamental of Operations
  • Fundamental of Economics
  • Project Management beyond planning and control

For graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, information technologies, physical and mathematical disciplines, the Evaluation Commission will verify the opportunity of a different articulation of the first year course in order to fill possible gaps in technical-engineering, mathematical and statistical disciplines.

Finally, for graduates who gained a Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline other than those specified previously the Commission reserves the right to apply further obligations and/or exclusions, depending on the peculiarities of the studies they carried out during their undergraduate degree course.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

As specified in the didactic regulations, 120 credits are required to obtain the degree. For more information about the specific disciplines of LM/31 visit http://www.cun.it/media/77608/lauree_magistrali.pdf.


The Master of Science in Management Engineering has been designed in a unitary fashion and the various majors share a course platform which provides identity to the Degree Programme and constitutes its foundations.

The first year includes some common subjects that contribute to define the common body of knowledge of a management engineer.

The second year is articulated in 14 majors that offer a diversified range of competencies that aim to met the demand of companies and institutions where management engineers will work. Each major is constituted by 25 characterizing subjects and 20 elective subjects, that students can select depending on the professional figure they aim to develop.

In order to ensure the interdisciplinary vocation of the MSc programme, at least 10 ECTS should be obtained through subjects that belong to disciplinary sectors (SSD) other than characterizing sectors (ING-IND 35; ING-IND 17; ING-IND 16). This requirement derives from the general educational guidelines of Politecnico di Milano that ground on the so-called “T shaped” training model, whereby the Bachelor of Science is aimed at ensuring deep domain competence and the Master of Science is aimed at developing horizontal and broad competence.



International students have the opportunity to attend an Italian language course during their studies, only in case they do not know the language yet.
The University organizes 40-hours Italian language courses: every student will be allocated in the appropriate level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) before the beginning of the lectures.
The courses offered by the Politecnico are held in semesters, with biweekly lessons, in line with the regular academic calendar.
Each student must attend at least 75% of lectures and pass a final test, delivered in 5 sessions throughout the year, in line with the regular academic calendar.
Attending the course and passing the test are prerequisites for enrolling in the graduation session.
Students of Italian nationality from foreign universities or foreign students who already have an Italian certificate of at least "B1" level before graduation are exempt.

7.2 Mode of study

This Course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities


The programme is full time and includes attendance of lessons and lab activities.

The «Curriculum» includes different programmes, tools and innovative activities consistent with the ILO of the Programme.

Integration of digital technologiesStudents have at their disposal a library of online programmes, provided through the Polimi Open Knowledge (POLIMI POK) platform, and named “Introduction to Management Engineering Series”, consisting of 5 programmes:

  • Fundamentals of Financial and Management Accounting
  • Fundamentals of Strategy
  • Fundamentals of Organization
  • Fundamentals of Operations 
  • Fundamentals of Economics

The content of these programmes is conceived with the aim of aligning the skills of incoming students and trying out the flipped approach (1 ECTS for the first year programmes).

Relationship with companies. All the students have the chance of being involved in a real project carried out inside a company (Project based learning), since all the labs of the Master of Science involve either companies or institutions (10-15 ECTS). This enables the students to be exposed to key problems characterising the real projects:

  • Definition of the project goals
  • Interaction with managers
  • Search for data and information
  • Team working and leadership in an uncertain environment

Methodological programmes specifically focused on: 

  • Survey Research Methodology
  • Case study Research Methodology

Besides these initiatives, students are offered various activities specifically aimed at stimulating their individual interests and inclinations. In this connection, the Hub of Student Activities (HSA) aims to promote and coordinate the initiatives offered both by the university and by the students themselves.

Examples of these initiatives are the consulting club and the manufacturing club, which offer each year a series of optional activities, available on the "Passion in action" portal.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

In the next pages, the Previously approved study plans are described.

Given the broad educational offer available within the scope of the MSc programme, any autonomous study plans will be exceptionally accepted only when accompanied by strong motivations.

In general, autonomous study plans that do not include at least 10 ECTS other than ING-IND 16, ING-IND 17, ING-IND 35 will not be accepted for the sake of ensuring the interdisciplinary nature of the programmes, in line with the general educational guidelines shared at the University.

An exemption to that limitation is granted only to MSc students who submit an autonomous study plan for the purpose of participation in international exchange projects (such as the Erasmus programme).

7.3.2 Internal Double Master of Science Degree


The Internal Double Master of Science degree programmes are joint programmes developed in cooperation with another Study Course with the aim of integrating the management engineer competence profile with different disciplines, in order to answer to the needs of some specific sectors through a new professional profile.

In the 2021-2022 academic years, the following Internal Double Master of Science degree programme will be run. For each programme, the preventively approved study plans (useful for the achievement of the master of Science degree in Management Engineering) are presented. Further information is available in the related Teaching Regulation of the Internal Double Master of Science degree.

7.3.3 Stages


Stages done abroad as activities officially recognised by Politecnico di Milano, if they are not used within the Thesis’ work (see Paragraph 7.5) may be recognised as additional credits (and additional only). Each stage is worth a maximum of 10 credits, depending on the number of hours. 7.3.4 POLIMI Ambassador Green Technologies


Politecnico di Milano aims at strengthening the skills related to Green Technologies in the Master of Science degree programmes.

The goal is to create a new professional profile, the Ambassador in Green Technologies: a MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and specific aptitude to innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of the economy. The Ambassador in Green Technologies profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in the green sector, and transversal skills, which allow graduates to broaden their knowledge in the field of Green Technologies and to adopt a systemic approach to the design, management, innovation, and study of the life-cycle of green technologies.

The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification of Ambassador in Green Technologies.

As part of the educational training, students must acquire at least 30 credits in courses related to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile, which have to be chosen among those proposed in the degree programme or among additional courses, as detailed in the specific information.

The Ambassador in Green Technologies certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and and an electronic badge will be issued by Politecnico di Milano.

Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile, will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.

9. Faculty

The names of professors for each Course, together with their subject, will be available on the degree programme starting from the month of September.

10. Infrastructures and laboratories

Teaching activities take place at the premises of the Bovisa Campus (via Lambruschini 4, Milano) in modern and functional buildings equipped with computer laboratories. The Study Programme Board Secretary’s Office is on the ground floor of the building and is open to students in the morning.

11. International context

As reported by a recent EQUIS (the European Quality Improvement System) survey, the Management Engineering degree is recognised as a programme of excellence creating a uniform professional profile which unites traditional fundamental engineering competencies with the organisational, corporate and productive skills typical of Business and Management Schools. About the 30% of the students enrolled in the Master of Science in Management Engineering is international.

There is a continuous growth of the number of foreign professors and of courses and seminars in English. In addition, there are numerous opportunities to study abroad in prestigious universities both in Europe and outside Europe (eg. exchange programs international seminars abroad, international double and dual degrees). Among other opportunities, it is worthy of noticing that there are some agreements of International Double Degree (called Dual International Degree) with other prestigious European institutions, with a specific Management Engineering curriculum. From the year. 2016/2017, there is also an experimental program, Alliance4Tech, which joins three prestigious European technical universities. The exams taken abroad will be recognized in the curriculum according to the rules outlined in paragraph 12.1. The proposals made by students for an exchange program with foreign countries are subject to prior approval by a Commission appointed by the Board of Study Course. 12. Internationalization

13.1 Requirements for the acceptance in exchange programmes

Since admission criteria for the Master of Science degree already exist, there are no additional rules to gain access to the international exchange programs, a part what defined in the calls by the University. However, the Commission keeps the right to check the whole curriculum (past and present activities) of each exchange programme candidate to verify the alignment of the student’s profile also with the expectations of the receiving institutions.

13.2 Credits which must be attained from the Politecnico di Milano

It is not possible to acquire credits related subject already frequented, which have not yet been taken. The evaluation of the subjects taken abroad will considered for the calculation of the final result, based on the rules defined by Politecnico di Milano. For double and dual programmes, the starting average is calculated based on the actual subjects that are valid for the achievement of the Master of Science degree of Politecnico di Milano.

13. Quantitative data
