Course Title PHYSICS OF NUCLEUS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The course aims at developing an introductory but not elementary knowledge of nuclear physics. In particular, the fundamental ideas behind the comprehension of the structure and properties of nuclei will be developed, clarifying to what extent this is possible starting from the basic interaction among their fundamental constituents, the nucleons. Therefore, after introducing some required mathematical and physical complements, the course begins with the study of the strong nuclear interaction between two nucleons. An essential part is then devoted to the presentation of some of the theoretical models developed to describe complex nuclei. To conclude, radioactive decays (in particular beta decay and weak interaction) and nuclear reactions will be treated, with particular attention to the physical topics of major interest for engineering applications.
