Course Title MAGNETISM AND SUPERCONDUCTIVITY
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course presents the two most important manifestation of ordering phenomena in solids: magnetism and superconductivity. Magnetism and superconductivity are governed by microscopic interactions, ultimately among electrons, but the macroscopic phenomenology is the result of both interactions and dimensionality. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity are also presented as they are important macroscopic quantum phenomena. Phenomenology, experimental methods and theoretical models are considered and confronted. Contents: Atomic moments, Exchange interaction, Magnetic order and magnetic structures, Magnetism in metals, Excitations in magnetic systems, Magnetism at low dimensionality, Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) and Superfluidity, Superconductivity, Experimental techniques (Magnetic resonances, Mössbauer spectroscopy, muon spin rotation, Elastic and inelastic scattering of neutrons and x-rays).
