Credits (CFU / ECTS) 9.0
Period 2nd semester
Course Description The aim of this course is to provide students with the basic tools of Mathematical Analysis and Linear Algebra. The main methodological objectives are: to acquire appropriate mathematical language and method; the comprehension of the theoretical aspects of the subject; to develop a correct approach to problem-solving, taking advantage of the theory. The program deals with the following topics: Matrix calculus, eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Linear applications, bases in Rn. Quadratic forms. Linear systems, analytic Geometry in R3. Real functions of several variables; limits and continuity; differentiation; derivatives of higher order; Taylor's theorem and quadratic approximations. Optimization for real functions of several variables; optimization with constraints. Riemann's integration of real functions of two and three variables; applications. Curves and surfaces; line integrals; surface integrals. Vector Calculus. Vector fields, Green's Theorem, the Divergence Theorem. Ordinary differential equations: second order linear equations with constant coefficients; the harmonic oscillator; systems of two first order linear equations.
