Semester First Semester
Course Description The innovator's basic methods and tools The context: science, research, innovation, technology. The problem formulation: thumbnails of inductive patterns, deductive and logic approach. Scientific and critical thinking. Guidelines to build up efficient and effective research activities: basic principles of project management. The innovation role of R&D units in modern industry The role of material specialists in industrial technologic innovation. Historic evolution in Research and Development (R&D) units in industry. Short notes on the strategic approach of modern R&D for progress. The role of EU work programs: introduction and base guidelines for idea development in the EU knowledge economy. Seminars on alloy-designing in advanced application for industry competiveness Example and case-histories for metallic materials for innovative products: - Ultrafined grain materials (UFG) - Magnesium semisolid processes; - Sustainable and non-conventional production of metal-alloys. Laboratory sessions During the second period, students work together (5-6 people) in a project team to develop/optimize a product. They shall define: market area, market requirements, translation of market and technical requirement into objectives and constraints, optimized materials selection to fit purposes, definition of project's work breakdown structure (identifying project's work packages and time planning); planning the material work-flow and main technologic process routes. . Main objectives of Student's project are: a) to build team project (defining roles and partnership); b) to define product objectives; c) to plan and manage the research activities from material selection to bench-testing phase.
