Course Description The course is based on the description of the physical principles of the photovoltaic and the thermoelectric energy conversion effects, and the description of the properties of materials of interest for such applications, with particular attention to new inorganic nanostructured materials and systems. Introduction to direct energy conversion technologies; solar radiation; review of semiconductor physics; the photovoltaic effect; p-n junction under illumination, efficiency definitions and theoretical limits; crystalline Si solar cells; thin film solar cells; organic solar cells; 3rd generation photovoltaics and nanostructured materials for innovative solar cells. Phenomenology of thermoelectric effects; efficiency and figure of merit of thermoelectric systems; introduction to irreversible thermodynamics; microscopic description of thermoelectric effects in solids (Boltzmann equation); conventional and advanced thermoelectric materials; nanostructured thermoelectric materials.
