Course Title NANODEVICES CHARACTERIZATION
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course will develop tools to understand charge transport in high mobility 2-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures, focusing on the behaviour of electrons in solids in electric and magnetic fields. Nanodevices Characterization will cover Linear transport theory and the Boltzmann equation in 2-dimensional carrier gases; the quantum effects seen at weak and strong magnetic fields at low temperature, and the classical effects seen at strong magnetic fields at room temperature; T-matrices will be employed to study transport in vertical devices such as resonant tunnelling diodes and superlattices. Structural characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction of thin films and Raman and micro-Raman spectroscopy will be covered in conjunction with the linear elastic theory of thin mismatched layers and the behaviour of crystal defects.
