Course Description Metrology: principles of measurements; reference standards and International System of units (SI); fundamental and secondary measurement units; units in linear and logarithmic scales; graphic representation of experimental data. Statistical analysis of measurement data: probability density function, mean, variance, correlated variables, and measurement uncertainty; compatibility between measurements and weighted mean value. Interpolation and regression of measurement data. Data acquisition systems: sampling and A/D conversion; characteristics and working principles of DACs and ADCs (speed, resolution, quantization uncertainty, number of equivalent bits); properties and use of DAQ systems; LabVIEW software for automated measurements. Instrumentation: digital voltmeters (differential and integrating) and multimeters (DMM); digital oscilloscope; basics of spectral measurements and spectrum analyzers. Applications: A couple of specific examples of measurements will be discussed in detail during exercises and experimentally verified during the Lab. activities.
