Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The course is composed of two modules; in the first module, the goal of the course is to teach students the methodologies for modelling, analyzing, and designing wireless networks. Moreover, the course provides the students the instruments for understanding of the modern standard technologies related to Mobile Radio Networks and Wireless Internet. Each topic related to modelling methodologies is treated both theoretically and practically. Selected topics related to technologies are associated with some experimental activities. In the second module, the course describes the technologies underlying the operation of wireless local area networks (WLAN) and provides the mathematical tools to analyse the main wireless network protocols. The students will understand the main mechanisms that regulate the operation of the main wireless protocols (e.g., Wi-Fi) with both theoretical lessons and several practical experiences on real networks. Then mathematical methods will be introduced for analysing the performance of the main protocols for wireless networks, at the access (Polling, Aloha, CSMA), network (routing in ad hoc networks and Mobile IP) and transport (TCP) layers.
