Multiple interference, solid étalon, Fabry-Perot interferometer. Theory of multilayer films. Young interferometer. Spatial coherence. Scalar theory of diffraction. Huygens-Fresnel integral. Fresnel (near-field) diffraction. Fraunhofer (far-field) diffraction. Fourier transform properties of a thin lens. Gaussian beams. Gaussian beam propagation through optical systems. 2. Principles of lasers. Interaction of radiation with atoms and ions: semiclassical approach. Pumping systems. Passive optical resonators. Laser static and dynamic behaviour: rate equations.
