Course Description The Course is aimed to offer the comprehension of the present Optical Communications, the technology supporting the worldwide telecommunication networks. The Course is self-contained and provides the knowledge for designing simple optical communications nets. The contents of the course include: WDM optical communication systems. Direct and coherent detection: spectral power density, noise contributions, Signal to Noise Ratio. Direct detection, quantum-limited. Bit Error Rate. Introduction to light quantum theory. Statistical properties of the light. Stimulated emission. ASE noise. Master equation. EDFA, Raman and parametric amplifiers. During the Course, leaders of the industrial sectors of the optical communications (manufacturers and operators) will be invited and the visit to major plans in the sector will be even organized. The Course is complemented by numerical exercises and labs experimentations. The course includes some topics that are taught using the flipped classroom approach
