Course Title LABORATORY OF MICRO AND NANO STRUCTURES
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description Laboratory of Micro- and Nano-structures is focused on the analysis of cellular behavior in response to the adhesion surface morphology. Lessons will review some of the main techniques for the fabrication of micro- and nano-structured surfaces relevant to the field of biomaterials (optical lithography, soft lithography, hot embossing, ...), the more common methods for their characterization (optical and electron microscopy, AFM, profilometry, ...) and in vitro cell culture techniques and procedures. This acquired knowledge will be applied during lab hours for the preparation and morphological characterization of micro- and nano-structured scaffolds out of materials suitable for cell culture. These scaffolds will then be seeded with a selected cell line and different analyses and viability essays of vitality will be performed to evaluate the influence of surface morphology on cells fate For laboratory activity students will be divided into teams. To complement the project activities and to stimulate active learning, the structuring skills of thinking and knowledge and the assessment among colleagues, the entire planning of the laboratory activity will be carried out as flipped / blended classroom. All the material required for planning lab activities will be distributed in advance. The students will then be invited to discuss and coordinate, under teacher guidance, to design the experiments and set all experimental activity parameters the in order to obtain reliable experimental results. Grading will take into account the accuracy in laboratory activities planning, the quality of classroom presentations and the comprehensiveness of a final report containing the main conclusion deriving from experimental activities Please note: this is a limited number access course.
