Course Title PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The course is organized in two parts. The first part concerns the basic elements of probability theory: axiomatic definition of probability space, conditional probability, independence, random variables and random vectors (joint distributions, moments, Gaussian vectors, covariance matrix, ...), Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem. In the second part the basic concepts of mathematical statistics are given: elements of the theory of parametric point estimation (maximum likelihood method and moment method), confidence intervals for population characteristics, hypothesis tests, hints of non-parametric statistics. The course topics will be carried out with attention to stimulate a double vision of the basic themes: from the points of view of mathematical models and of engineering applications. The aim of the course is to provide the student with the conceptual bases both to face applications in the field of Computer Engineering in the presence of random phenomena, and to afford the study of the probabilistic/statistical issues present in advanced courses.
