Course Title THEORY OF STOCHASTIC PROCESSES
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description Information theory studies the fundamental limits related to information representation and transmission. The course introduces the fundamentals of probability and random processes seen through the lenses of information theory and its main applications in the field of computer and communications engineering. In addition to basic concepts of probability and random processes, the course will introduce the concepts of entropy, relative entropy, mutual information and their application to data compression, the source coding, data transmission, computational complexity, probabilistic inference. The course also addresses the basic concepts of estimation and numerical simulation of random experiments, both essential as a tool for the analysis and design of modern computer and communication systems. The laboratory activity will focus on the construction of simulation models in MATLAB with the objective to apply and verify the theory studied during the lessons.
