Course Description The macromolecular nature of polymers and its effects on their structure on several length scales Outline on polymer synthesis: polymer classification based on polymerisation process. Polymer molecular mass and dimensions: averages and distributions. Amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers: conformations, chemical and structural requirements for crystallization and crystalline structure. Methods for the characterization of chemical structure, molecular conformation, crystallinity (structure and degree of crystallinity). Structure to property relationships: dependence of specific volume and mechanical properties on temperature; transitions in polymers and characteristic temperatures. Classification of polymers based on characteristic, processing and use temperatures. Time and temperature dependence of the mechanical behaviour of polymers: response to static stresses or strains (creep and stress relaxation) and to periodic loads; effect of temperature: time-temperature equivalence. The ultimate properties of polymers: the yielding phenomena. The thermal properties of polymers. Effects of processing on the structure and properties of polymers. Material selection and design with polymers.
