Course Description Section I - Chemistry of the atmosphere Elements of environmental photochemistry The primordial atmosphere The present atmosphere: regions and structure Chemistry of the upper atmosphere Chemistry of the stratosphere: the ozone layer The ozone hole: mechanisms of formation and destruction of the ozone. Chemicals involved in the ozone depletion processes Chemistry of the lower atmosphere Air pollution, photochemical smog, particulate air pollution, acidic rain. Section II - Environment and energy Greenhouse effect and global warming. Origin and mechanisms of the greenhouse effect. Main gases responsible for the greenhouse effect. Estimation of global energy resources and their consumption. Renewable energy sources. Biomass. Conventional and alternative fuels. Biofuels. Section III - Toxic Elements of mutagenesis Pesticides. Insecticides, natural and artificial. Polychlorinated, organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. Pollution of natural waters: eutrophication and pollution by heavy metals such as Antimony, Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Chromium. The first lessons of the course will be devoted to the recall parts of general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. Elements of coordination chemistry will be also presented.
