Course Title CHEMISTRY FOR SUSTAINABLE POLYMERS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The Course "Sustainable polymer chemistry" is inspired by the following sentence: as chemistry led to the creation of most fundamental polymers for nowadays life and economy, chemistry will give key solutions to address the problem of polymers' environmental impact. The Course will give to students fundamentals about: (i) the impact of polymers on the environment, over their whole life cycle (ii) the role of chemistry in giving solutions for such impact. The following subjects will be covered. Outline of polymer chemistry. The impact on the environment of main polymer families: plastics: vinyl polymers, polyesters, polyurethanes, elastomers. Definitions and main concepts of green, sustainable, circular chemistry and polymers. Green polymerization methods. Classes of sustainable polymers: traditional, new, future. Sustainable polymer composite materials, for applications: packaging, automotive, tires, coating.
