Course Description The Food Packaging Materials (FPM) course covers the principles about modern food packaging technologies and industrial processes and products. The course is divided into 3 parts: 1. An introduction on the basic concepts of materials science and technology related to food packaging: mechanical and surface properties, durability, gas permeation, migration, in food contact applications. Materials selection processes will be also introduced. 2. Introduction of the four basic types of packaging materials (plastics, glass and ceramic, metal, and cellulosic) and their applications in industrial food products. Processes of fabrication and role in food industry will be presented 3. Introduction to elements of storage stability and packaging requirements of various food categories, considering legislation problems
