Course Title STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN STUDIO
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 9.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description "The course aims to introduce the structural analysis of plane frames (which is the subject of the final written test), as well as the fundamentals of concrete elements design (which is the subject of the final oral test). Both themes are the basis for preparation of the technical report of a building that is developed during the laboratory. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS: Mohr's Theorem: rotations and displacements in statically determinate beams. Force Method: application to continuous beams. Displacement Method: application to frames. Qualitative diagrams of the internal stress resultants and check of the results. CONCRETE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS: Actions on structures. Limit states. Concrete properties. Reinforcing and prestressing steel properties. Steel-concrete bond. Concrete cracking and tension stiffening model. RC cross-sections under axial force and bending moment. Confinement effects in RC columns (introduction). Shear resistant mechanisms in RC beams. Torsion in RC beams (introduction). Strut-and-tie models: short cantilever beams, foundation footings and other stress diffusion problems. Prestressing systems. Loss of prestressing. PC beams under bending and shear. Tendons profile. Anchoring systems and prestressing transfer."
